Have a 3D ultrasound done in Rotterdam

Recently, you have been able to have a 3D ultrasound performed at the practice of Verloskundigen Rotterdam-West. This recreational ultrasound is performed at your own request and is intended to provide an even better view of the baby. This allows you to see the baby’s hands, feet, and face in 3D. Furthermore, a USB stick containing all the photos is included in the price of the ultrasound.

Different types of ultrasounds

Ultrasound is the conversion of sound waves into image formation. Unlike X-rays, for example, ultrasound is not harmful, and the sound waves are not audible. A distinction is made between internal and external ultrasound. An internal ultrasound is sometimes performed at the beginning of a pregnancy because the fetus is still small at that time and can be used, for example, to examine the placenta. An external ultrasound goes through the abdominal wall and is intended to examine the position and growth of the child and to measure the amount of amniotic fluid.

What is the difference between a 2D ultrasound and a 3D ultrasound?

You can have a 2D ultrasound at several points during your pregnancy. With this ultrasound, you look through the baby so that you can see the organs and structures, among other things. This happens, for example, during the 20-week ultrasound: a prenatal screening where the baby’s growth and the amount of amniotic fluid are checked. With a 3D ultrasound, you look ‘around’ the baby instead of ‘through’ it. This brings the outside into view, allowing you to see the face, for example. A 3D ultrasound is in black and white or sepia, and unlike a 2D ultrasound, the image does not move. If you want a moving image in 3D, you must choose a 4D ultrasound.
