Covid vaccination

Pregnancy and the coronavirus vaccine

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from coronavirus. Therefore, pregnant women can get the coronavirus shot. The shot restores protection levels. The shot reduces the risk of complications and hospitalization during pregnancy.

When to vaccinate during pregnancy

You can safely receive a coronavirus vaccination throughout your entire pregnancy. There is no evidence that vaccination in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy leads to complications. Would you prefer not to receive a shot in the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy? Then you can postpone the vaccination. However, the advice is not to wait until the end of the pregnancy to do so. This is because if you contract coronavirus at the end of the pregnancy, there is a higher risk of complications.

Time between coronavirus vaccination and other vaccinations

The advice is that you:

  • Schedule the coronavirus vaccination at least 14 days before or after another vaccination. The same applies to the maternal pertussis vaccination.
  • You do not need to take into account the time between a coronavirus vaccination and a Rhesus shot (anti-D). This may also be done on the same day.

You can receive the booster shot 3 months after your last vaccination, or 3 months after a positive test.

After pregnancy

It is expected that the vaccine will not pass into breast milk, just like other vaccines. Therefore, there is no objection to vaccination during the breastfeeding period.

The vaccine has no effect on contraceptives.

Coronavirus vaccination is not harmful to your child

At this moment, there is no indication that a coronavirus vaccination can be harmful to you or your child. Newborn babies are protected against infectious diseases by the antibodies they receive from their mother via the placenta. This appears to be the case for a coronavirus vaccination as well.

Fertility and coronavirus shot

The vaccination has no effect on fertility. Not in women and not in men. Vaccination during pregnancy has no effect on the formation of the placenta. This is evident from the studies (so-called toxicity studies) conducted by all vaccine manufacturers. The Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NVOG) and the RIVM indicate that coronavirus vaccination is possible during IVF treatments.

Breastfeeding and vaccination

You can breastfeed if you have been vaccinated. According to the RIVM, there is no evidence that the vaccine passes into breast milk, or that it can be passed to your child via breastfeeding.
