In the first few hours, actually nothing at all. Your child can still lie there sleeping soundly. Only as labor progresses and the contractions become stronger and closer together does your child have less freedom of movement and wake up.

The least pleasant part for your child is the pushing contractions. The head is pushed down with the chin on the chest, then the head is pushed back again, and moreover, he or she makes a pivot turn. The heart then beats faster or slower due to the pressure on the head. During a contraction, the heart also beats slower because the blood supply via the placenta is temporarily reduced.

Incidentally, a healthy baby can handle all of this just fine. So you don’t need to worry about that. If your baby hasn’t been born this week yet, he or she is probably just having a wonderful time in your belly.

You

The due date has passed just like that, and nothing has happened. So there you are. The thumb-twiddling increases because you are probably getting very impatient now. Meanwhile, the check-ups with your midwife are continuing as usual. So you will see her again this week. It might feel like you are ‘overdue’, but officially, a birth between the 37th and 42nd week is still considered ‘on time’.

Only after the 42nd week are you truly overdue. That is when you come under the care of a gynecologist. If there are no indications that labor will start soon, there is a good chance that you will be induced.

But for now, that time has not yet come. After all, contractions can start at any moment. Sometimes your midwife can also give nature a helping hand by stripping your membranes. During an internal examination, she uses her fingers to separate the membranes from the cervix (without breaking them!). This can stimulate the uterus in such a way that contractions start.

Week 41 Being born Your baby Have you ever wondered what your baby notices during childbirth?
