Your baby is kicking their legs, even making stepping movements, waving their arms, clenching their hands into fists, wiggles their toes and fingers, and swimming back and forth from one side of your belly to the other.

You probably don’t feel it yourself yet, but if you have been pregnant before, you might. Then you know what to look out for. That mobility is very good for training the muscles.

Your child’s vocal cords are now fully developed too. However, your child naturally cannot make any sound yet, because he or she needs air for that. Your baby is also growing some downy hairs now. These cover the entire body: the forehead, the tummy, the legs, the hands…

Those downy hairs remain until about the thirty-seventh week. They probably serve to keep the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands in place. That sebum, in turn, is necessary to protect your child’s skin against the softening effect of the amniotic fluid and against infections. If your child is born slightly earlier than 40 weeks, there may still be fine hairs on the shoulders, back, and face.

You

Your uterus is now about the size of a firm fist. As the uterus continues to grow, other organs are being compressed slightly. This applies to your bladder, among others.

Incidentally, everything about you may become a bit rounder now. Not only your belly and breasts, but also your hips, shoulders, and face. It often gives you a softer appearance. How much weight you will gain during your entire pregnancy cannot be predicted. On average, you gain about twelve and a half to fifteen kilos.

Those kilos are distributed as follows:

your baby: 3400 grams

placenta and membranes: 650 grams

amniotic fluid: 750 grams

uterus: 1000 grams

breasts: 800 grams

blood: 1000 grams

extra fat: 3400 grams

extra liquid: 1500 grams

On average, thin women often gain slightly more weight because their bodies need to build up a layer of ‘mother fat’ to function properly. But it can also turn out differently. Some slender women barely have a belly at the end of their pregnancy.

Week 14 Swimming around and training Your baby It is a hive of activity in your belly.
