So breathing isn’t necessary, but your baby is already starting to practice the breathing movement. He does this by drawing amniotic fluid into his little lungs and then squeezing it out again. The vocal cords are now fully developed. However, your child cannot use them yet, because without air, he cannot make any sound with them.

Your baby’s skin is protected by a white, slightly oily substance that smells sweet. It protects the thin and delicate baby skin in the amniotic fluid. You can often still see some of this vernix after birth. This natural vernix also protects the baby’s skin after birth.

You

Do you retain a lot of fluid and suffer from swollen feet and ankles? During pregnancy, your body produces extra fluid. For some women, this is only two or three liters, but for others, it can be much more. Due to gravity, the fluid sinks, which can cause you to develop swollen ankles and feet.

You can try to eliminate excess fluid by eating celery, asparagus, and fennel (just don’t eat too much of these). Try to avoid salty foods (ready-made meals and sauces, in particular, contain a lot of salt). Additionally, drink plenty of fluids; this stimulates your kidneys to continue functioning properly and thus eliminate excess fluid.

Furthermore, sit with your legs elevated as much as possible. And raise the foot end of your bed slightly (for example, by placing a pillow under the mattress). Of course, you can also pamper your feet and legs with a nice (foot) cream. Massage your legs from bottom to top. And give your feet plenty of room in slippers.

Week 16 Practicing the breathing movement Your baby The baby gets the necessary oxygen from your blood.
