Recently, he or she has also been able to breathe. That sounds a bit strange, because your child doesn’t actually inhale air. But it does allow amniotic fluid to flow in and out of the little lungs, and that is a great practice run for ‘real’ breathing. Moreover, this is much needed, as the lungs still need to mature.

Grasping and holding is also getting better and better now. Your child now occasionally grabs his or her foot or the other hand. He or she also squeezes the umbilical cord every now and then, but you don’t need to worry about your baby pinching it shut, because that is impossible. Nor do you need to worry about your child getting tangled in the umbilical cord while tumbling. It is well over 50 centimeters long, so it is long enough to give your child all the space he or she needs.

You

Do you notice milk already coming from your breasts? That is possible. Your breasts are also preparing themselves for breastfeeding, and as a result, a little foremilk or colostrum (a yellowish, transparent fluid) may occasionally come from your nipples. Incidentally, whether or not you have foremilk during pregnancy says nothing about the success of breastfeeding.

Milk production only really gets going once your baby is born. It used to be said that you had to prepare your nipples for breastfeeding by rubbing them dry with a towel after showering. This ‘hardening’ or ‘roughening’ is really not necessary. You mainly run the risk of damaging your nipples. You also do not need to apply cream to your nipples and areola. However, you can massage your breasts with a nourishing oil or cream.

Week 23 Grasping and holding.
