Your child is fully formed! From now on, he or she will only continue to grow. Of course, he or she is far from viable yet. It will take months for the organs to mature and develop further. But everything that is supposed to be there is there now. Even an upper and a lower jaw, which already contain twenty small bumps that will become baby teeth after birth. And a little hair is already growing on top of the head.

To grow properly, your child needs nutrition supplied via the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord contains three blood vessels connected to the placenta. Surrounding the umbilical cord is a thick, protective layer of ‘jelly’ that ensures these important blood vessels cannot be pinched. Even if your child swims through a self-formed loop of the umbilical cord and creates a knot, the blood vessels are not pinched.

You

Suddenly, a mountain of information is coming your way, and it is starting to sink in that you actually have a lot to arrange for the arrival of a child. Don’t worry. It may seem like a lot, but you still have a few months to arrange everything at your own pace. Enjoying yourself (at least if you aren’t feeling too unwell) and pampering yourself is much more important right now.

Due to the changing hormonal activity in your body during pregnancy, you may experience constipation (difficulty having a bowel movement). Also, because the uterus grows larger, the intestines are pushed aside (they are compressed). It is normal for the intestines to work more slowly during pregnancy.

Drink enough water or decaffeinated tea. Try to drink as little coffee as possible, as too much caffeine is not good for the baby. Eat fiber-rich foods (for example: whole grains, vegetables, and fruit). Drink a glass of lukewarm water first thing in the morning upon waking up. A breakfast with fresh fruit, bio-yogurt, and fiber (muesli or All-Bran) can also help. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Sufficient exercise also helps to activate your bowels.

When you can finally go to the toilet, pay close attention to your posture. Do not lean forward, but lean your back diagonally backward against the wall or cistern. In this way, you create a better slide for the stool, so to speak. This is just like during childbirth, when you also sit diagonally backward to make the route out as easy as possible for the baby.

Week 10 First milestone: completely finished!
