And in a few days, the outlines of the hand will develop at the ends of the arms.

The head is also taking shape more and more. There are already eyes, a nose, nostrils, and a mouth. However, the head is enormously large in proportion to the rest of the body, and that will remain the case for a while. Only later in the pregnancy will the body become somewhat larger in proportion.

Your baby is still growing at a brisk pace, about 1 millimeter a day. That doesn’t seem like much, but it is when you consider that two weeks ago your baby was only the size of a grain of rice and is now already the size of your little finger nail.

You

If you were to have an ultrasound now, you would already be able to see the heart beating. Usually, however, it is a vaginal ultrasound so early in the pregnancy. That provides a better image at such an early stage.

Incidentally, you only get such an early ultrasound if there is a medical reason for it. For example, if you are at risk of a multiple pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy. But also if you have had a miscarriage before or if you are experiencing some blood loss. That blood loss does not always necessarily mean anything bad.

It is quite possible that this is still from implantation bleeding, or that it is contact bleeding. Such bleeding is caused by a small blood vessel in the cervix rupturing. The cervix is now very well supplied with blood, which can cause some blood loss during intercourse. This usually involves no more than a drop of blood or a little light red discharge. If you experience this frequently, please visit your midwife.

However, blood loss can of course also mean that you are having a miscarriage. In that case, you often experience abdominal pain as well, and it is advisable to contact your midwife and/or GP.

Week 7 The little head is taking shape more and more.
