Up until now, the baby was essentially a floppy little shape, but this week the beginnings of the skeleton are forming. It contains no bone yet, but cartilage. In a few weeks, the real bone cells will develop. The little brain is already starting to function and the heart beats about sixty times a minute, the stomach produces gastric juices, and the liver produces blood cells. <\/p>\n The little fingers are starting to form now as well, but are still attached to each other by the skin like webbed feet. Your baby is developing so rapidly now, and so many important things are happening, that this makes your baby very vulnerable. That is why it is especially important during this period that no harmful substances such as alcohol and nicotine come into contact with your child. <\/p>\n Perhaps you are eager to tell everyone the big news, or perhaps you would prefer to keep it a secret between you and your partner for a little while longer. That is your personal choice. If you tell people early, you have the advantage that people can already empathize with you, and that is certainly nice, especially when you are feeling absolutely terrible. You can probably also count on a bit more understanding if you miss parties or call in sick at work. <\/p>\n However, there is still a chance that things could go wrong, and not everyone feels comfortable with others knowing about it. On the other hand, even then, you could probably use some sympathy. Do you feel the urge to be cautious out of fear of a miscarriage? Make no mistake; no matter how small and fragile the fetus is, it is firmly anchored in your uterus. It really won’t just come loose during exercise or sex. <\/p>\n A miscarriage is usually the result of a developmental defect. This occurs in one out of eight to ten pregnancies. There is nothing that can be done, even if you had been lying flat for every week. Often, the fetus has already died before the bleeding begins.
