It is also known as vitamin B11. Folic acid is found in many foods. For example, in fresh vegetables, fruit, potatoes, whole grain products, and dairy.

If you eat a varied diet, you get enough folic acid. However, at the beginning of your pregnancy, you need extra folic acid. Eating many foods containing folic acid is not sufficient at that time. For example, a pregnant woman would have to eat 50 slices of wholemeal bread every day to get that much. Or 5 kilos of potatoes. You have to take tablets for the extra folic acid.

Taking folic acid reduces the risk of developing neural tube defects (spina bifida) by 70%. You can buy 0.4 or 0.5 milligram folic acid without a prescription at a drugstore or pharmacy. If you have previously been pregnant with a child with a neural tube defect, a higher dosage of folic acid is recommended.

0.4 or 0.5 milligrams of folic acid is not harmful. Even if you do not get pregnant immediately, simply continue taking folic acid every day.
